Smokestack is an original, one-of-a-kind mixed media work on paper — begun in 2019 and completed in 2026. Started as a collage, set aside, and unearthed years later to build an entirely new abstract world on top of the old one.

At its center is a hand-printed 35mm darkroom photograph of a smokestack, layered beneath acrylic, tempera, watercolor, colored pencil, and tissue and construction paper. Two fragments survive as windows into the work's earlier life: the photograph itself, surfacing beneath the paint, and a silver-blue magazine cutout embedded within the black mass — its interior touched with lavender and goldenrod, reflective and quietly insistent against the surrounding field of cream and grey.

Smokestack suits spaces that can hold a strong focal point: an entryway, reading room, or study. Its palette of black, cream, and silver-grey pairs naturally with dark-stained wood, aged brass, linen, or raw concrete.
